Errors in reloading software & drivers

I have an HP Photosmart D110a printer.  I currently am using the Windows 7 operating system.  I have had this printer for 2-3 years.  Initially, I set the printer up to use a wireless connection; that way everyone in the house could use the same printer.  I use Time Warner Cable for my internet service.  Recently TWC upgraded us with a new modem/router.  It is an awful piece of equipment, and we had constant trouble connecting to the printer via wifi (even though the router was right next to the printer).  We even had one of their techs come over for a service call.  Issue was never resolved.

After weeks of frustration, I finally decided to get a USB cable for the printer, so at least one of us could print.  When I first attached the USB cable, the system seemed to recognize it automatically, and I was able to print right away.

Now, here is where it gets a bit confusing.

Yesterday, I attempted to scan a document, but HP Solutions was telling me that the printer was not connected.  I assumed (big mistake) that it was trying to do a wifi connection.  I thought maybe I should reload the drivers.  So, I got out my trusty disc.  In order to reload, I would first have to uninstall, then reinstall.  I have done this before with no problems.  Everything seemed to be going okay at first, but then I got an error message that the HP Photosmart D110 All-In-One Driver Software 14.0 Rel 7 did not load; at which point it automatically uninstalled whatever had been installed at that point.  The disc is a few years old, so I figured I would go to hp.com and download the drivers from there, which I did.  Then I attempted to install them, everything looked okay, then I got the exact same error as before.  The process to uninstall is not really a complete one, and I thought that might be an issue as well.  So I tried to uninstall using Windows 7.

There is a file that I cannot delete.  It says it is the HP Photosmart D110 All-In-One Driver Software file, but it is an empty file.  I cannot delete it using Windows or the cmd line.  I think this might be causing the error or the blockage, but of course, I could be wrong.

Thanks in advance for any support here.  If anyone needs more information, please let me know.

P.S. - I am using Windows 7 32 bit.
